University of Akureyri
The University of Akureyri, UNAK, is a state university that has served Akureyri and its rural surrounding since 1987. UNAK offers programs in School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Health Sciences, School of Business and Science. It has a well-established distance learning programs with more than half of the 2300 students enrolled in flexible learning.
UNAK was a founding member of the University of the Arctic, a cooperative network of universities, colleges, and other organizations committed to higher education and research in the North. UNAK offers the only Arctic study program in Iceland, Polar Law, where emphasis is placed on areas of international and domestic law concerning the Polar regions. The program offers a variety of courses taught in English. UNAK also offers studies in Arctic issues as a part of other studies in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Numerous other courses with strong Arctic ties are taught in the school, for example in the School of Health Sciences and School of Business and Science.
